TITLE: Influence of hormonal changes on the temporomandibular joint – a review of the literature
STRESZCZENIE: Praca zawiera przegląd piśmiennictwa opisujący wpływ zmian hormonalnych na staw skroniowo-żuchwowy. Autorzy publikacji opisują wpływ poziomu hormonów płciowych na staw skroniowo-żuchwowy, ze szczególnie podkreślonym znaczeniem 17β-estradiolu (E2). Opisuje się także wpływ poziomu parathormonu oraz leptyny. Dokładne mechanizmy selektywnego oddziaływania na staw skroniowo-żuchwowy w dalszym ciągu są przedmiotem badań. Zgromadzone wyniki badań pozwalają w określonych przypadkach wdrożyć innowacyjne i skuteczne postępowania terapeutyczne. Na podstawie dokonanego przeglądu piśmiennictwa stwierdzono wpływ zmian poziomu niektórych hormonów na strukturę i funkcjonowanie struktur stawu skroniowo-żuchwowego.

SUMMARY: The paper presents a review of the literature describing the influence of hormonal changes on the temporomandibular joint. The authors describe the influence of the level of sex hormones on the temporomandibular joint, with the emphasis on the importance of 17β-estradiol (E2). The influence of parathyroid hormone and leptin levels is also described. The exact mechanisms of selective influence on the temporomandibular joint are still under investigation. The collected research results allow, in specific cases, to implement innovative and effective therapeutic procedures. Based on the review of the literature, it was found that changes in the level of certain hormones affect the structure and functioning of the temporomandibular joint structures.
