Przypadek torbieli korzeniowej spowodowanej przetrwałym korzeniem zęba mlecznego u 17-letniej pacjentki

The case of periapical cyst caused by persistent deciduous root in a 17-year-old female patient

A periapical cyst is the most frequently occurring cyst of the maxillary bones. According to the definition, a cyst is a one- or two-chamber pathological cavity within bone or soft tissue usually filled with fluid, rarely with semi-fluid or gas, the occurrence of which is not associated with accumulation of purulent contents (1-2).

The starting point for a cyst are Malassez epithelial cells which remain in the tooth periapical area as a result of incomplete loss of the enamel organ. These cells can be inactive for many years, however as a result of stimulation by an inflammation factor or an injury they start to divide intensely, inducing the occurrence of a cyst (2-3).

A significant factor in the pathogenesis of the occurrence of a cyst is necrosis of the tooth pulp. Approximately 60% of cases of periapical cysts develop in the maxilla, and 40% – in the mandible. In rare cases periapical cysts develop in the periapical area of a deciduous tooth (1).

The objective of this article is to present the clinical case of a periapical cyst caused by persistent deciduous tooth root in a 17-year-old female patient and to discuss the treatment method.
