According to the currently applicable cyst classification of the World Health Organization (Kramer’s) (4), as well as the division suggested by Kaczmarzyk et at. (1), the described case of the cyst should be classified as a periapical cyst with inflammatory etiology. Histopathological verification of the material collected during the procedure confirmed the initial diagnosis.
The periapical cyst is an example of a cyst which occurs most frequently in the area of the maxillary bones. Its occurrence is related to the presence of the residual Malassez epithelial cells related to the necrosis of the tooth pulp and the inflammatory process occurring within the periapical periodontal area (5-7). Shear and Speight claim that development of periapical cysts related to deciduous teeth does not occur frequently and it involves only 1% of cases of all periapical cysts (1). Most frequently the occurrence of these types of changes is observed within deciduous molars of the mandible (67%), deciduous molars of the maxilla (17%) as well as deciduous incisors (13%) (1, 6, 8-10). Development of periapical cysts concerns mostly males and it is observed between 3 and 19 years of age (1, 6, 8-11).
Normally, periapical cysts related to deciduous teeth do not show symptoms until the occurrence of a secondary tooth infection therefore they are most frequently detected accidentally during routine X-ray checkups. In a patient in whom the cyst [...]
