Application of asymmetric rapid palatal expansion (RPE) appliance with a fan screw in the treatment of a unilateral cleft lip and palate – a case report
Unilateral crossbite is a malocclusion, which is difficult to treat, especially when it is accompanied by a congenital defect, such as cleft lip and palate. Conventional methods of expansion have several disadvantages. That is why careful selection of the apparatus and planning of biomechanics are necessary. Otherwise, we may cause przean iatrogenic overbite on the opposite side (1-3). In 1860, Angel first introduced the idea of expanding the arch by tearing the palatal suture. Since then, rapid maxillary expansion (RME) has been the most frequently chosen method in children and adolescents for the treatment of crossbite (4).
Objective of the work
The aim of the study is to present the application of an asymmetric RPE (rapid palatal expansion) appliance with a fan screw in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate on the left side with partial left crossbite and lack of space for canines in the upper arch. The utilization of this appliance resulted in the expansion of the dental arch. The place for tooth 13 was also restored and the tooth was properly positioned. In addition, the appliance was also used to situate the tooth 23 in the [...]
